This little guy got a positive response in critique, and he was really my favorite idea to come out of the whole process when trying to design that environmental logo. I knew i wanted to develop him a little bit more, and add color to him. This is what I came up with so far. He started as a hand sketch, then I cleaned up the design with Photoshop and finally Illustrator. The ghost is a sticker printed with my inkjet printer. The can is, of course, spraypainted, complete with drips. I plan on making a handpainted version of this guy as well on a bigger can I have already spraypainted. He may become a recurring character so stay tuned…

A Not So Broken Frame

I am so proud of building this frame. Essentially, it was built twice. After, gluing and nailing it slightly wonky the first time, Sedrick convinced me that it’s just better and feels better to do it right. I pulled the frame apart at the corners with a hammer. At first, I was reluctant to destroy something I had worked so hard to build, even if it was just temporarily. But with Sedrick’s help, I deconstructed the whole damn thing corner by corner.

Becca, a classmate, helped me sand the old glue off the corners. She pointed out extra glue was preventing the corners from fitting at a properly flush 45° angle. After, a bit of sanding, I clamped all four corners first, rather than clamping, gluing, and nailing one corner at a time. With the clamps still loose I added glue generously to all four corners, then slowly tightened the clamps. That made all of the difference.

Clamping, gluing, and nailing two corners all at once without clamping the other two corners caused the angle of the two long sides to bow too wide. That made the short piece for the other side seem too short! But after pulling everything apart, I saw that there was no problem with my measurements or the way I cut the wood, which was a bit of a relief.

At any rate, once everything was done properly, albeit the second time around, this was the result:

What is important here is PROCESS (right, Professor?)… These look like ess now, but any one of these could look amazing with a little TLC (that’s tender loving care… not The Learning Channel… although that might help too…)
